My Zen MK III is usually always on when I am at home. I've noticed that after a power failure the unit does not power up automatically and also does not start when the power button on the front panel is pushed. I have to power cycle the unit using that power button on the back panel. Just wondering if this is normal behaviour.

Yes, this is expected, the system will not automatically restart itself. With devices that have linear power supplies like yours, you will often find you need to turn off at the rear power switch to allow the capacitors to sufficiently discharge before powering back on to allow a boot-up. Consequently, the only devices where this would not apply would be the switch-mode powered devices like ZENmini and PULSEmini.
