I have a Zen MK3, and its a great machine. Recently I had a problem with my Synology single bay 2tb NAS. it will not back up to it for some reason (it used to). Anyway, I have a portable 2tb USB drive, which is great for backing up the Music folder on the PC (am doing it now, to get ready for a new PC). Can I clear its contents, and use it hooked up to the Zen, to make a backup of everything thats on the Zens HD

Yes you can backup to your USB drive. Most users do typically.
