Want to buy some hi-res albums from Qobuz download store, which format is the best to choose from for Innuos (flac, alac, wav, aiff...) or which format is recommended by Innuos?

Why not download both a WAV and FLAC file of the same album and listen to both. If you cannot hear any difference , or, the difference is so small it doesn’t matter to you, then choose the format you want to continue with?
There isn’t any “right or wrong” here.
AFAIK Qobuz doesn’t allow the user to choose the level of compression of their FLAC files, they are what they are.

yes I know, do you use uncompressed flac as Innuos suggest?
I use FLAC when available and have some stuff as MP3 when that’s all that’s available.

Tried FLAC v WAV etc. and could hear no difference. Have always been able to hear differences on stuff like cables etc.

I try before I buy with Hi-Res and it’s served me well. Occasionally it’s better. Mostly it’s different but not better.

I actually have a question for you since you know more than I (total streaming newbie) - I don't even know how to access the qobuz purchase/download section via the sense app... is that possible? I thought it had to be downloaded elsewhere, then transferred to innuos mk3....

mahalo in advance if you can explain

you have to purchase on qobuz website and can download it. via sense app you have to sync also your purchased music with qobuz but then you only get the qobuz version in your library. or you can safe your purchased album on a nas or server and have access to it via sense app. hope that helps…

Nice discussion, I'm also not sure which is better, HiRes, remaster or the original (cd) quality. However, whichever sound quality is better, be aware before buying HiRes albums that some albums in HiRes on Qobuz are different from the original cd. For instance, the Yes album 'Tales from Topographic Oceans' in the HiRes version on Qobuz is missing the first minutes of the intro. Also the HiRes version of Talking heads' album 'Stop Making Sense' starts with Psycho Killer, but along the way the song is not exactly the same as on the original cd or in the movie. It looks like a different version of the song is (partly) mixed into the album. Since I prefer the originals, which I happilly own, I stick to the CD quality. Please remember, it's all about the music ...

I think it’s important to understand that this has literally nothing to do with hi-res.

In the case of Talking Heads it’s because the latest version harks back to the original 1984 release and not the subsequent CD versions or the 1999 remaster. What you’re getting is not wrong. It’s how it was originally presented.

Same with Yes. If you have the 1973 vinyl you’ll know that Intro simply isn’t there. It was added on later versions.

First and foremost, I would like to say: check out Bandcamp if the artist is there. Our support to musicians will be stronger (i.e. they get more of our money) on Bandcamp than with other websites and streaming hosts.

Secondly, there are levels of compression in the FLAC protocol. FLAC 0 is the native Innuos format, which is a lossless format. When you download FLAC files from Bandcamp, you will get FLAC 0 format. It is the same as WAV and AIF, but if you prefer not to have any decoding then get the WAV version.

I know my remarks had nothing to do with weather the recording is in hires or any other quality. I just wanted to explain that not all recordings / remasters are the same. Which quality version you prefer is up to your personal taste. I noticed that for instance the first Led Zeppelin albums in HiRes sound a little 'sharp' and seem to have a lack in the lower regions. I prefer the original CD's. But then, maybe my system isn't high-end enough.

As for Stop Making Sense, I have the original concert registration on DVD and the latest HiRes remaster of the track 'Psycho Killer' is definitely different from the original. I don't know about 'Tales From Topographic Oceans', since I only have a CD version. Choose the version you prefer, I do ...

I had a look at Bandcamp and added a bookmark, thanks.

I like and use Band Camp but it has new owners and they’re transitioning from PayPal to Stripe. This has consequences some may not be comfortable with.

1 - Stripe supports less countries than PayPal. Significantly less. Artists in those countries are now effectively excluded from Band Camp.

2 - the payment structure has altered and the immediate consequence is, to over simplify, that poorer selling artists get less per unit whilst bigger artists get more.

3 - it still compares very favourably to other streaming services but the gap has started to narrow and the move to Stripe suggests that previous support for independent artists is going to dwindle and deliberately so.
